President’s Announcement Receives Widespread Support.

Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a noted businessman, philanthropist, and charity worker in Zambia. Recently, Dr. Rajan Mahtani was quoted in ‘Mast Newspaper’ saying that he completely supports the announcement made by Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema. President Hakainde Hichilema, on the occasion of Africa Day, announced that he plans to completely abolish the law of death penalty. This law of death penalty is cruel, inhumane, and degrading and does not hold any significance in the present society. After this announcement by the President, widespread support has come from various arenas including Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, while supporting the announcement made by the Zambian President, stated that Death penalty is not only legally not required, but also morally incorrect. In fact, the majority of past Presidents have tried to avoid capital punishment strategically or by using mercy prerogatives. The last capital punishment in Zambia was given in the year 1997 and since then, Presidents have tactically avoided the death penalty as it has become too controversial.

Another reason for the increasing controversy surrounding death penalty in Zambia is the present condition of the Zambian prisoners. The prisoners across these prisons are often devoid of basic human dignity and fundamental human rights. Several past Presidents and Vice-Presidents visiting these Maximum facilities termed then as ‘hell’ and ‘unliveable’. Following this, the Zambian Government has collaborated with institutes such as Parole Board Zambia (PBZ) and Zambian Correctional Facilities (ZCF) for strategic decongestion of the prisoners. As such, the concept of death penalty holds no significance when at the other side prisoners are released after complete transformation and becoming model citizens. In a similar manner, Dr. Rajan Mahtani also iterated that giving death penalty punishment is against the learnings of the Bible as Jesus Christ sacrificed himself on the cross to atone for the sins of the people who believe in him. As such, the decision from the Zambian President was a step in the right direction.
